How to Prepare Your Home for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Property owners in coastal and inland areas need to prepare well before a storm is forecast. Proper preparation can mean the difference between minor damage and catastrophic loss.

Before Hurricane Season Starts

Inspect Your Roof

Have a professional inspect your roof for loose or missing shingles, damaged flashing, and weakened areas. Even small roof vulnerabilities become major failure points under hurricane-force winds and driving rain.

Secure Loose Items

Patio furniture, garbage cans, potted plants, and decor become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Plan where you will store these items and have containers ready before a storm approaches.

Check Windows and Doors

Install storm shutters or have plywood pre-cut and labeled for each window opening. Check weatherstripping on all doors and replace any that is worn or cracked.

Trim Trees and Branches

Overhanging branches and dead trees are a leading cause of hurricane property damage. Have a certified arborist remove dead limbs and assess any trees within falling distance of your structure.

Review Insurance Coverage

Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. Review your policy and consider separate flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program or private insurers.

When a Storm Is Approaching

• Install storm shutters or plywood on all windows
• Bring in all outdoor items including patio furniture and trash cans
• Clear gutters and downspouts of debris
• Turn off propane tanks and gas at the meter
• Photograph every room for insurance documentation
• Move valuables and electronics to upper floors
• Charge all devices and power banks
• Fill your vehicle gas tank
• Stock at least 3 days of water and non-perishable food

After the Storm

Do not return to your property until officials declare it safe. When you do return:

• Photograph all damage before any cleanup begins
• Contact your insurance company immediately
• Prevent further damage by tarping roof leaks and boarding broken windows
• Have a professional inspect for structural damage, gas leaks, and electrical hazards
• Never use generators indoors or in enclosed spaces

Hurricane preparation is not a one-time task. Review your plan annually, update emergency supplies, and address property vulnerabilities before June 1 each year.
